A notorious criminal wanted in two murder cases was arrested at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport upon his return from Bahrain.
Indian authorities said the accused, Nishar Hasan, returned to India recently, and was later taken to Jamshedpur.
The Union Home Ministry had issued a lookout notice against the man, according to a report in the Press Trust of India news agency.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Piyush Pandey said the man was apprehended by Jamshedpur police with the help of Delhi airport authorities as he returned from Bahrain.
“Nishar was the prime accused in the murder of Pawan Yadav, who was shot dead near the Swarnarekha River under Sakchi police station about two years ago,” said Mr Pandey, at a briefing at East Singhbhum district police station.
“Nine others had already been arrested in that case, and firearms used in the crime seized.”
The man was allegedly involved in other criminal activities as well, including the murder of Raja Singh in 2023, and an attempt to murder Ashutosh Ojha, Mr Pandey added.
He was also reportedly extorting money from people involved in land dealings and was working to revive the Amarnath Singh gang, following the gangster’s assassination in 2023.
“Under pressure from police, Nishar fled the country and took refuge in Bahrain,” said the report.
On the recommendation of the East Singhbhum district police, the Union Home Ministry issued a lookout notice against him.
Following the notice, he was forced to return to India recently and was arrested at Delhi airport.
The Jharkhand government had announced a reward of Rs50,000 (BD230) for Nishar’s arrest.
Police have registered seven criminal cases against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. He is also being investigated for his criminal network, financing, arms supply routes and property investments.
