As more than 1.5 million pilgrims gather in Mecca ahead of this year’s Haj amid soaring summer temperatures, Saudi Arabia is increasingly relying on large-scale cooling and shading infrastructure designed to protect worshippers from extreme heat and improve movement across the holy sites.
Expansive shading and cooling projects have become an essential pillar of the infrastructure at the holy sites. At the forefront of these efforts are extensive pathway shading initiatives. Vast networks of modern canopies now cover high-traffic pedestrian routes between the Holy Sites, significantly reducing direct solar radiation and minimising physical fatigue.
This infrastructure is reinforced by the installation of specialised heat-reflective flooring materials, which drastically lower surface temperatures during peak daylight hours compared to traditional surfaces.
Advanced high-pressure misting networks and strategically expanded vegetation cover are actively utilized across heavily congested areas to drop ambient air temperatures and enhance air quality.
