Palestine dominated the agenda as Arab League foreign ministers met in Cairo yesterday, with leaders calling for an end to Israeli settlement activity and reiterating support for the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The session focused on efforts to persuade more Western countries to recognise Palestinian statehood and to halt what ministers described as “Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip.”
Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani participated in the164th ordinary session of the Arab League Council at the level of Foreign Ministers.
UAE Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar chaired the session.
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and foreign ministers from across the Arab world also participated.
Mr Aboul Gheit said the Cairo talks were being held at a “delicate and dangerous time.”
He accused Israel of seeking to “liquidate the Palestinian cause and erase the Palestinian entity,” describing the war in Gaza as a “genocidal war” aimed at eliminating Palestinian statehood.
He urged urgent action to stop the massacre in Gaza and said defending the two-state solution was “a defence of the future of the region.”
The ministers also discussed developments in Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, and Yemen, as well as broader security, maritime, and humanitarian concerns. Economic, social, legal, and administrative matters were also considered.
The session concluded with the adoption of a series of resolutions addressing the issues on the agenda.
Dr Al Zayani also participated in the ministerial-level meeting of the Committee for Monitoring the Implementation of Decisions and Commitments of the Arab League.
The discussions focused on reviewing the efforts of the Arab League Secretariat in following up on the implementation of resolutions issued at the 34th Arab Summit in Baghdad in May 2025.
Bahrain’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League Fouzia Zainal participated in the meeting.

The minister met Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr Badr Abdel Aaty. They welcomed the successful outcomes of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister’s, recent visit to Egypt, which strengthened bilateral co-operation and resulted in several agreements and memoranda of understanding across strategic sectors. They also discussed the historic ties between Bahrain and Egypt, exploring ways to enhance collaboration, co-ordinate diplomatically, and support each other’s roles in regional and international organisations. The meeting further addressed current regional challenges, including efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, protect civilians, deliver humanitarian aid, and advance sustainable peace in the region.
