Firefighters' videos on Monday showed severe flooding in Como, a city in northern Italy, with water streaming through streets and squares, piling debris and fallen trees, and partially submerging cars.
Firefighters were seen working with fire trucks and a helicopter to conduct rescues and check submerged vehicles.
Torrential rains triggered widespread flooding and landslides, engulfing streets in Como's historic centre and forcing the closure of the lakeside road and the state highway.
Firefighters said dozens of interventions were underway after mudslides blocked provincial routes, with residents in Cabiate, in the Como province, and nearby towns rescued by helicopter from upper floors of their homes.
Authorities deployed special earth-moving units to clear debris and secure areas at risk, while the municipality ordered precautionary road closures due to fears of further landslides.
