BAHRAIN and the United States have stepped up their historic relations with the signing of a memorandum of co-operation on border security.
The memorandum aims to facilitate the exchange of information to protect the safety and security of both countries’ territories and to conduct checks related to borders, immigration and travellers and to prevent the entry of ineligible individuals due to reasons related to terrorism, crime or national security.
It was signed by Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem in Washington, DC, yesterday.
The Interior Minister was visiting the Department of Homeland Security as part of his visit to the US.
He said Bahrain and the US have stood together for more than a century in pursuit of peace, stability and shared prosperity.
Gen Shaikh Rashid pointed out that the partnership – under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad and President Donald Trump – has flourished, rooted in mutual respect and a common commitment to advancing global security.
Secretary Noem welcomed the minister’s visit and highlighted the strategic relations, which have evolved over the years of close co-operation.
Gen Shaikh Rashid said Bahrain’s dedication to this relationship was reaffirmed during the recent visit of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, which underscored Bahrain’s steadfast commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with the United States.
“Our aspiration is to join the US Visa Waiver Programme, an outcome made possible by the trust and confidence built through years,” he said.
