JUDO – Bahrain’s rising judoka Ruslan Poltoratskii narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the IJF World Championships Juniors Individuals 2025, currently being held in Lima, Peru.
Poltoratskii was competing in the men’s under-60kg category, and he came one victory shy from securing a place on his weight division’s podium.
Poltoratskii opened his medal bid in Pool C with a victory over Jack Uraco from Peru with an ippon.
He then defeated Ahmed Alaoui Cherifi from Morocco after scoring a pair of waza-aris in their bout, but in the ensuing quarter-final, lost to Yusei Adachi of Japan, who threw for an ippon.
Poltoratskii moved on to the repechage round, where he defeated Diego Garcia Ramirez from the Dominican Republic after scoring an ippon.
That earned him his place in one of two bronze medal contests, where he faced Samariddin Kuchkarov of Uzbekistan.
Kuchkarov took the victory in a heated affair, earning him his bronze.
Retsu Matsunaga of Japan went on to capture the gold medal while Adachi came away with the silver.
Kuchkarov shared the final podium step in third with Jonathan Yang from the US.
Poltoratskii was the lone Bahraini participant in the junior worlds, organised and run by the International Judo Federation (IJF).
The event featured more than 460 competitors who were flying the flags of 65 countries from six continents.
