Bahrain bagged three gold medals in mixed martial arts (MMA) to headline a sensational five-medal haul yesterday in the third Asian Youth Games.
Eldar Eldarov was first to strike gold, earning the hosts’ maiden title in this year’s mega multi-sport event. Eldarov won in the boys’ 60kg modern MMA category.
Abdulakim Babaev followed suit by taking the boys’ 65kg modern MMA gold medal, and then Ibragim Khalidov completed the kingdom’s title treble in the boys’ 70kg modern MMA division.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa was in attendance to watch Bahrain’s fighters claim their places atop their podiums.
Meanwhile, Sultanakhmed Sultanakhmedov also won a silver medal for Bahrain yesterday in the boys’ 65kg traditional MMA competition.
Tanishi Bhowmick completed the kingdom’s winnings yesterday by taking bronze in the girls’ under-54kg combat discipline 16-17 in the sport of Muay.
Yesterday’s haul brought Bahrain’s medal tally to six so far, including three gold, two silver, and one bronze.
