SWIMMING – HONG Kong’s Sum Yiu Li and South Korea’s Seungwoo Ko were both double gold-medallists yesterday on the opening day of the swimming competitions in the third Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.
Li helped Hong Kong’s girls strike gold in their 4x100 metres freestyle relay final at Khalifa Sports City’s Olympic-sized pool in Isa Town. She teamed up with Chelsie Lam, Wui Kiu Man, and Gilaine Ma to triumph in their race with a time of three minutes 45.60 seconds.
China took silver 0.90 seconds behind while Indonesia won bronze 7.99s back.
Li also captured the gold medal in the girls’ 50m freestyle final, which she won in 25.59s.
Meanwhile, Ko helped South Korea’s boys capture gold in their 4x100m freestyle relay final. Ko was joined by Yongjoon Jo, Wonjun Song, and Jihoo Lee, as they won their race in 3:24.89.
Indonesia took the silver medals 2.52s behind, while China bagged bronze 2.57s adrift.
Ko was also the title winner in the boys’ 400m freestyle final, which he finished in 3:53.26.
Elsewhere in yesterday’s individual events, Mohammadmahdi Gholami from Iran won gold in the boys’ 100m butterfly and Yu-teng Huang from Chinese Taipei clinched gold in the boys’ 200m backstroke.
China excelled with four gold medals yesterday. Yunshuguang He triumphed in the boys’ 50m freestyle, Siyao Li took the girls’ 100m butterfly crown, Mingxia Sun claimed the girls’ 200m backstroke gold, and Fuzhen Yang secured the girls’ 400m freestyle title.
Among those present during yesterday’s podium ceremonies were Supreme Council for Environment vice-president and Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club High Committee deputy chairman Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid bin Isa Al Khalifa and Bahrain Aquatics president Abdullah Atiya.
Swimming competitions continue today at the same venue from 10am.
