Ryder, the miracle mutt, who survived being dragged by a car approaching a busy traffic roundabout, is on the road to recovery.
His ordeal, captured on video, went viral on social media and sparked outrage from animal lovers, as well as a police investigation.
Ryder, a playful three-year-old black German Shepherd, is now safe and receiving care at a veterinary clinic, thanks to the efforts of the kingdom’s animal shelters.

Ryder
“I watched the video the day it was posted and filed a police report,” Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals chairman Mahmood Faraj told the GDN. “I also spoke to the person who recorded the video, who said that the footage had been taken at the Buri Roundabout.”
The Interior Ministry announced on a social media post last week that police had arrested the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident.

Mr Faraj
“Following questioning, the authorities determined that the incident was accidental as the driver was unaware that she was dragging the dog along the road,” Mr Faraj said.
“Ryder had been tied to a seat inside a vehicle without air conditioning. With the window rolled down for ventilation, it is believed he jumped out after being startled. The vehicle only travelled a few metres before other road users alerted the driver,” Mr Faraj added.
Ryder’s embarrassed owner agreed to hand over the animal to be rehomed by the Bahrain Animal Rescue Centre (BARC) on October 31 and he is now receiving specialist treatment at All Care Veterinary Clinic in South Sehla.

Ms Al Awadhi
“I was absolutely horrified when I watched the video,” BARC representative Soha Al Awadhi told the GDN. “I knew no matter what, I had to intervene with the team to help this poor animal.”
Although the incident was not ruled as deliberate, she believes it serves as a warning to pet owners that they have to be fully aware of their responsibilities and any actions that may place a dog in danger.
“The ordeal has clearly left Ryder shaken but, thankfully, he suffered no fractures. He does, however, have multiple scrapes and paw wounds, but he is expected to make a full recovery.”
Unrelated to the incident, veterinary tests also revealed that Ryder had been suffering from a tick infection and elevated liver levels, which will take several weeks to stabilise.
“Ryder is a sweet, gentle dog, deserving of a loving home, and thankfully, a kind person has offered to foster him,” Ms Al Awadhi said, adding that supporters are trying to raise funds to cover Ryder’s veterinary bills, which have reached BD321.
