CYCLING – MOHAMMED Hassan Jawad won the third and penultimate stage of the fifth Nasser Bin Hamad Cycling Tour for Amateurs yesterday.
Jawad triumphed in the Bahraini amateurs’ category at the end of the gruelling 130-kilometre leg, which started at Marassi Galleria and ended at Al Jazayer Beach in Zallaq. Riders crossed various governorates as well as several of the kingdom’s cultural and touristic landmarks throughout the day.
Jawad was followed in their race class by Saeed Talal Al Saadi and Hassan Aqeel Thamer in second and third place, respectively.
With the stage result, Jawad took three of the race jerseys for Bahraini amateurs, including the yellow jersey for general classification (GC) leader, sponsored by Bapco Energies; the blue jersey for top under-23 rider, sponsored by Marassi Galleria; and the red jersey for points leader, sponsored by Beyon.
The green jersey for the over-40 category, sponsored by Al Salam Bank, was awarded to Aqeel Hassan.
Meanwhile, in the race’s other category for GCC riders, Bahrain national team members, and expatriate residents, Saeed Hassan continued his fine run, taking first place in the stage. Majid Saeed Al Khatri finished second while Adel Abdulbaqi came third.
Helal Jaber Al Harbi maintained his hold on the orange jersey for first place in the GC, sponsored by Bapco Energies, while Saeed Hassan took the grey jersey for points leader, sponsored by Beyon.
David Plese remained holder of the pink jersey for the top man in the over-40 category, sponsored by Al Salam Bank, and Mahdi Hassan Jawad continued to wear the purple jersey for the under-23 category, sponsored by Marassi Galleria.
The final stage of the tour takes place today, featuring an 80km course. There will also be a 40km women’s race, children’s races, and a 10km handcycling race for athletes of determination.
