MOTORSPORT – EX-FORMULA One world champion Jenson Button, now in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Cadillac Hertz Team Jota, will be making his final appearance as a full-time competitive racing driver today in the Bapco Energies 8 Hours of Bahrain.
Button announced that he will be leaving the WEC at the end of this campaign and retiring from professional racing, which will mark the end of an illustrious career that has spanned nearly three decades.
“The last dance is underway,” said Button on Thursday on his official social media account.
“This will be my last race,” Button was quoted as saying to BBC Radio Somerset. “I’ve really enjoyed my time with Jota in WEC, but my life has got way too busy and it’s not fair on the team or on myself to go into 2026 and think that I’m going to have enough time for it.
“My kids are four and six and you’re away for a week and you miss so much, you don’t get this time back.
“I feel like I’ve missed a lot the last couple of years, which has been fine because I knew that would happen, but I’m not willing to do that again for another season.” Of this weekend’s race in the kingdom, Button said: “I’ve always liked Bahrain, I think it’s a fun track, and I’m going to enjoy it as much as I can because this will be the end of my professional racing career.”
Button has raced with Cadillac Hertz Team Jota the past two WEC seasons in the Hypercar class. He competes alongside Earl Bamber and Sebastien Bourdais in the team’s #38 Cadillac V-Series.R Hypercar.
The 45-year-old was the 2009 F1 world champion. Aside from F1 and WEC, he has also competed in various other popular championships around the world.
