A Saudi-registered Rolls-Royce car, worth almost BD125,000, was towed away in London's Grosvenor Square as part of a crackdown on illegal parking.
Westminster City Council removed the Rolls-Royce, which was parked illegally on the pavement in front of the luxury Chancery Rosewood Hotel in Mayfair. Photos of several luxury supercars parked by guests of the hotel illegally on pedestrian walkways, including a Saudi-registered Lamborghini and Mercedes G-Class, were circulating on social media following several complaints from concerned residents.
The Council said its usual approach of fines had proven ineffective, as it is difficult to track down non-European registered vehicle owners.
"The vehicles are foreign registered - the ones we photographed have Saudi number plates - so the chances of recovering the costs are virtually nil,” a spokesperson for the Council told the BBC.
"And the owners of the vehicles, which include Rolls-Royce and Lamborghinis, are so wealthy that fines barely register."
The Council told the BBC that the Rolls-Royce was dropped several streets away, while other owners moved their cars.
