A man allegedly struck a taxi driver on the head with a stone, leaving him with injuries that required stitches at an emergency room.
The 34-year-old suspect is standing trial at the High Criminal Court, accused of robbing the Bangladeshi victim of two mobile phones and a wallet containing BD220.
Prosecutors said that the Saudi defendant “overpowered the victim and fled with his belongings” during the incident, which occurred in December.
During questioning by the Public Prosecution, the Bangladeshi told investigators that he was working as a taxi driver when he encountered the Saudi defendant shortly after picking up two passengers in Adliya.
“I was working when the defendant knocked on my side mirror and then the window,” the 55-year-old testified.
“When I rolled down the window, he shoved his hand into the car. He snatched two phones that were near the centre console, and took my wallet from the car door.
“I chased after him but he assaulted me, picking up a rock from the ground and attacking me with it. I was able to get back my wallet and one of the phones, but he kept the cash and my other phone.”
The alleged victim, who was left bloodied and dizzy, told investigators that he was forced to sit on the ground as passers-by rushed to his assistance and called for an ambulance. He was taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex where his wound was tended to.
According to a medical report, the head injury required stitches all the way to the back of his scalp, and the Bangladeshi also sustained swelling and redness to his hand as a result of the assault.
A prosecution summary of security camera footage stated that the Saudi defendant was seen blocking the taxi’s path before opening its door and stealing the driver’s belongings.
The video also showed the victim, with his face covered in blood, it added.
On the Saudi’s criminal record were two minor infractions – in 2023, he reportedly ate a suhoor meal at a high-end hotel, but left without paying for it, and also stole a chess set on his way out.
In 2024, he was reported to the police for speaking inappropriately to a female motorist, insulting her mother with obscene words.
Judges have set February 24 as the date to issue a verdict in the case.
