HANDBALL – BAHRAIN’S senior men’s handball national team begin their main round campaign in the 22nd Asian Men’s Handball Championship in Kuwait City today against the UAE.
The Bahrainis and Emiratis are in Group Two of this phase alongside defending champions Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Group One features South Korea, Japan, Iraq, and Kuwait.
Following a single round-robin, the top two teams from each pool will move on to the semi-finals, scheduled for Tuesday next week. With this tournament also acting as the continental qualifier for the 30th IHF Men’s Handball World Championship next year, all four top-ranked sides will book their tickets to the worlds.
Bahrain’s game with the UAE is scheduled for a 2pm throw-off this afternoon at Sheikh Saad Al Abdullah Al Salim Al Sabah Covered Hall Sports Complex. The nationals then take on Qatar on Friday at 2pm and then complete their schedule in this stage against the Saudis on Sunday at 4pm. All times are Bahrain.
The kingdom’s representatives made it to the main round after sweeping all three of their matches in the preliminaries – which included wins against Jordan and China, both of whom are in the Asian championship’s consolation bracket and will play for the Martyr Fahad Al Ahmad Al Sabah Cup, and the Iraqis.
After the semis, the gold and bronze medal games are set for Thursday next week.
The Bahrainis, coached by Robert Hedin from Sweden, have a 19-player squad in Kuwait City. They are led by inspirational skipper Hussain Al Sayyad, and the rest of the roster includes Mohammed Abdulhussain, Mohammed Habib Ahmed, Mohammed Habib Nasser, Hasan Madan, Mohammed Hameed, Jassim Khamis, Ali Alasheeri, Qassim Qambar, Ahmed Kadhem, Abdulla Abdulkareem, Ali Mahmoud, Hesham Issa, Sayed Ali Basem, Mahmood Hussain, Hussain Mahfoudh, Ali Redha, Jaafar Farsan, and Salman Al Showaikh.
The 30th IHF Men’s Handball World Championship is to be held in Germany from January 13 to 29 next year.
