HORSERACING – Athan lifted the Bahrain Jewellery Centre Cup last night to highlight the 18th meeting of the 2025-26 season at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
In attendance during the evening’s programme was Prime Minister’s Court Minister and REHC High Committee chairman Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Athan won yesterday’s sixth of nine races for owners Gulf Racing Club and trainer Fawzi Nass, with jockey Stephane Ladjadj in the saddle.
The five-year-old gelding took the 1,600-metre event for imported horses, offering BD4,000 in total prize money, with a length-and-a-half’s margin from runner-up Gulmarg, competing for Al Mohamediya Racing, Mohamed Hasan, and Soufiane Saadi.
Mr Irrelevant was third for Mohamediya, Nass, and Hussain Asghar, while Pure Dreamer came fourth for Al Adiyat Racing, Daniel and Claire Kubler, and Ebrahim Nader.
Also yesterday, Channagide triumphed in race four to claim the Porsche Cup. The 2,400m event was for imported horses with BD3,000 in winnings.
Channagide won for Hasan Mefareh Alajmi, Jaber Ramadhan, and Abdulla Faisal ahead of Mawood, competing for the Mohamediya-Hasan-Saadi triumvirate.
Best Adventure was third for Al Afoo Racing, Ramadhan, and Nader, while Mahrousa came fourth for Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, Robert McDowall, and Mark Lawson.
The Porsche Sprint Cup in last night’s eighth and penultimate race was captured by Deham for owners Victorious Forever and trainer Yousif Taher.
Jockey Hasan Ali rode the four-year-old gelding to first place along the 1,200m straight to come away with the lion’s share of the BD2,000 prize.
Retaj finished second for Al Meshqab Racing, Osama Hashim, and Mohammed Jamil; Magsooda was third for Yousif Ahmed Alboainain, Yousif Alboainain, and Hussain Mohamed; while Naahy took fourth place for Fata Abdulhaleem Majeed, Hashim, and Qasim Jameel.
Wojtek took The Jockey Club Cup in race seven, also held over a 1,200m straight with a BD2,000 total prize, racing for Afoo, Ramadhan, and Benoit De La Sayette.
Ra’s Al Hadd was the runner-up for Jawad Abdulwahid Ahmed, Jaffar Radhi, and Abdulla Faisal, while taking third was Nine Below Zero for Afoo, Ramadhan, and Lawson.
Sinj completed the top four in the Al Mallah Racing colours for trainer Abduljaleel Al Mallah and jockey Rosie Jessop.
In the first race of the day yesterday, a WAHO event held over 1,200m with BD1,500 in winnings, Al Ma’anagy 1971 lifted the Fatees Al Hajeri Cup for Victorious Forever, Taher, and Salem Alajmi.
Obeyan 1847 followed for Al Khaldiya, Adel Abdulla, and De La Sayette; Kuheilan Aafas 1970 was third for Victorious Forever, Taher, and Lawson; and Krushan M1080 took fourth for Mohamediya, Reyadh Ahmed, and Asghar.
Elsewhere on last night’s card, Tomahawk won race two for Abdulla Fawzi Nass, Fawzi Nass, and Ladjadj; Azka claimed race three for Azka Racing, Nass, and Ladjadj; Mowja triumphed in race five for Mohammed Khalid Abdulrahim, Haider Ebrahim, and De La Sayette; and Fury took the ninth and final race for Mohamediya, Nass, and Saadi.
