Food stocks are sufficient to meet the needs of the population and the markets are ‘stable’, Bahrain Chamber Food Sector Committee chair Khalid Al Amin said yesterday.
The committee continues to monitor stocks of essentials, and efforts are underway to further make sure that there are enough supplies for all, he stated in a meeting held via video conference.
“We have requested that priority be given to clearing essential food items at ports to ensure their rapid arrival to markets,” Mr Al Amin said.
“Meetings are being held with major food importers to ensure the availability of all the local market’s needs.”
Co-operation with the Industry and Commerce Ministry and the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry has helped facilitate the entry of food products into Bahrain, he added.
He believes that field visits by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, have sent a message of reassurance to citizens and residents.
The committee meeting also discussed challenges facing businesses operating in the food sector, and how current conditions have impacted them with increased costs and the need to use alternative shipment routes to secure supplies.
Meanwhile, the committee remains in continuous session, co-ordinating with the relevant authorities to monitor market conditions and ensure the stability of food supplies.
