The German Embassy supported the departure of 20 of its nationals from Bahrain, as citizens sheltering in place were advised to follow instructions and guidance issued by local authorities.
The embassy also called on its nationals in Bahrain to register with the German Foreign Office’s Electronic Registration of Germans Abroad (ELEFAND) crisis preparedness system to receive timely updates and assistance as necessary.
“The German Embassy in Manama continues to provide consular support and co-ordinates closely with local authorities and European partners to ensure the safety and well-being of German citizens,” an embassy spokesperson added, in a statement.
“German citizens currently in Bahrain are also advised to follow the guidance and instructions issued by the Interior Ministry and local authorities.
“Remaining informed through official channels and adhering to local regulations is important for ensuring everyone’s safety during this period.”
German Ambassador Henning Simon wished German nationals leaving the kingdom a safe and smooth journey back to their country, as the embassy supported citizens in reaching Riyadh, from where they were able to take flights to Berlin.
At the same time, he warmly thanked the authorities in Bahrain for their valuable support and excellent co-operation.
Bahrain’s airspace continues to be closed amidst the ongoing crisis.
“The current situation in the region remains challenging, but the team at the German Embassy in Manama is available around the clock to assist German nationals,” the embassy noted.
“In close co-ordination with the (German) Foreign Office crisis team and our colleagues in Riyadh, we were able over the past days to support German citizens in departing Bahrain and reaching Riyadh, from where all were able to safely continue their flights to Berlin.”
The embassy also reiterated that Germany has strongly condemned attacks against countries in the Gulf region including Bahrain and called on Iran to immediately cease missile and drone strikes against neighbouring states.
“Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Foreign Minster Dr Johann Wadephul in their respective telephone calls with His Majesty King Hamad and (Bahrain Foreign Minister) Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani described such attacks as irresponsible and warned that targeting uninvolved countries risks further escalation and instability in the region,” the embassy explained.
“Germany has so far focused on diplomatic efforts and de-escalation regarding the conflict.
“The German government has called for restraint from all sides and emphasised the importance of dialogue and political solutions to prevent further escalation in the region.”
The embassy noted that at this stage, Germany has not announced any direct military involvement and continues to co-ordinate closely with its European partners and international allies.
It also underlined the importance of keeping international maritime routes open, including the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for global energy supplies and international trade.
Berlin has stressed that freedom of navigation and the security of shipping lanes must be preserved, while urging all parties to avoid actions that could further destabilise the region.
Germany co-sponsored United Nations Security Council resolution 2817 led by Bahrain, which condemned the attacks and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Officials have also highlighted the importance of upholding the territorial integrity of all Gulf states, preserving regional stability, and resolving disputes through dialogue and international law.
