Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva Abdulla Abdulla delivered a joint statement on behalf of the GCC States and Jordan during a general debate yesterday at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council.
The statement strongly condemned the Iranian attacks targeting the territories of the GCC and Jordan, noting that these strikes hit residential areas, civilian objects and critical infrastructure, posing serious risks to civilian safety and undermining regional security and stability.
It emphasised that targeting states not party to any conflict constitutes a clear violation of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence, as well as a breach of international law and the principles of the UN Charter.
“Such actions represent a threat to international peace and security,” the statement noted, reaffirming the inherent right of GCC countries and Jordan to self-defence, in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter.
The statement further underscored that attacks against civilians, civilian objects and vital infrastructure amount to grave violations of international law, including international human rights law, and undermine the fundamental right to life and the protection of civilian populations.
The GCC countries and Jordan also welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, co-sponsored by 136 countries, which strongly condemns the Iranian attacks. They called on Iran to fully comply with the resolution and immediately cease such actions.
The statement reaffirmed the GCC countries and Jordan’s steadfast commitment to dialogue and diplomacy as the primary means of resolving crises, while commending the constructive role played by Oman in supporting these efforts.
