CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Pau Miquel narrowly missed out on a top 10 finish yesterday in the 80th Danilith Nokere Koerse one-day road race, held in Belgium.
Miquel finished the 186.4-kilometre event as part of the lead group in a sprint to the finish. He ultimately crossed the line in 12th place overall and was classified with the same finishing time as winner Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Premier Tech, who clocked a mark of four hours 16 minutes and 19 seconds.
Jordi Meeus of Red Bull-Bora-hasngrohe was the runner-up while Juan Sebastien Molano of UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
Bahrain Victorious’s Alec Segaert made it two members of the team in the top 20, also as part of the bunch sprint.
Amongst the rest of the squad, Alessandro Borgo finished 47th, Zak Erzen was 84th, Seth Dunwoody and Matevz Govekar were 86th and 87th, respectively, and Alberto Bruttomesso finished 98th.
Meanwhile, Bahrain Victorious are back in action today in the Grand Prix de Denain in France.
The race is known for its demanding cobbled sectors and is often compared to a smaller version of Paris-Roubaix.
The course includes 13 cobbled paths, which usually make the race very selective and place a strong emphasis on positioning through the decisive parts of the race.
Segaert will be one of the team’s leaders on a course that suits his characteristics well, while Govekar provides another option if the race comes down to a sprint. Oliver Stockwell, Daniel Skerl, and Bruttomesso will look for opportunities early in the race and support the team through the key sectors, while Erzen and Borgo will play an important role as the race approaches the decisive cobbled sections.
