The Council of Commissioners of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), chaired by its chairperson Ali Al Derazi, held an extraordinary meeting to address the human rights and humanitarian impact of the recent Iranian attacks on Bahrain.
The meeting focused on the institution’s national mandate to protect and promote human rights.
During the session, the board reviewed the latest developments and the severe violations of fundamental rights resulting from the attacks, including threats to civilian lives and damage to critical infrastructure. These acts were described as clear breaches of international human rights and humanitarian law, particularly the prohibition on deliberate or indiscriminate attacks against civilians and civilian properties, it stated.
The commissioners condemned the attacks, highlighting that they represent serious violations of international law and the United Nations Charter, overstepping on inalienable rights such as life, security and physical integrity.
The board also praised the prompt and effective response of Bahraini authorities, which included preventive measures and rapid interventions to protect citizens and residents, reflecting institutional readiness and a commitment to preserving human dignity.
Mr Al Derazi highlighted the measures taken by the institution since the attacks began, including professional monitoring and documentation of violations, gathering relevant evidence, and ongoing co-ordination with authorities to ensure rapid support and protection for affected individuals.
The board considered proposals from its members on the institution’s role during this period and approved the formation of a dedicated sub-committee to document the Iranian aggression and its effects on human rights in Bahrain.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the institution’s commitment to carrying out its national role with independence and professionalism, closely tracking developments, and taking all necessary actions within its mandate to strengthen human rights protection and uphold human dignity.
