While the Forever Green Campaign emphasises the planting of trees native to Bahrain, the Athel tree (Tamarix aphylla) seems to have been overlooked.
By virtue of its erect shape, it would be an excellent choice for planting along highways.
It is evergreen, producing in summer and autumn long, slender ‘racemes’: tiny pink and white blossoms at the tips of branches, giving the impression of being enveloped in a pinkish-white mist.
It is fast-growing, salinity tolerant up to 30,000ppm, drought tolerant, and extremely wind resistant.
