Bahrain’s infrastructure plans are becoming clearer after parliamentary replies from Works Minister Ibrahim Al Hawaj detailing projects across the country, from Hawar Highway and Buhair Valley to Isa Town and Manama.
The replies outline plans for highway upgrades, road repairs, expanded sewage networks and improved stormwater systems to support urban growth, housing and rising traffic demand.
Answering a question from MP Lulwa Al Romaihi, the minister confirmed that Hawar Highway will be widened into a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction. The project, now in the design stage, will include stormwater drainage network, pedestrian sidewalks, underground utility ducts and upgraded lighting and traffic signages.
“Implementation will commence after completion of procedures and co-ordination with relevant service providers,” he said.
In response to Strategic Thinking Bloc MP Dr Mariam Al Dhaen, the minister revealed that sewage network coverage in the Southern Governorate has reached 82pc, while Southern Governorate constituency two is now almost fully connected at nearly 100pc.
Completed works in Isa Town include rehabilitation of Avenue 77 and Road 4025 in Block 840, Road 4109 in the Educational Zone, and Phase Two of Avenue 41.
Projects underway and planned include:
• Road rehabilitation in Blocks 813, 809, 812 and 814 in Isa Town through 2027.
• A major traffic interchange project featuring a three-lane flyover.
• Widening Shaikh Salman Highway from three to five lanes over 1.7km between Bahrain Gas and Isa Town Gate.
• Capacity upgrades at Isa Town Gate intersection to cut waiting times.
Replying to MP Mohammed Al Rifaie, the minister detailed a three-phase infrastructure project in Wadi Al Buhair.
Phase One (Block 934) was completed in 2023 at a cost of BD7.5 million, including internal roads and a stormwater basin connected to Tubli Bay.
Phase Two combines roads and sewage works in one tender package. Designs and financial approvals are complete, Mr Al Hawaj said.
Phase Three is in final design, covering roads, drainage, lighting and sewage networks.
In response to Parliament’s public utilities and environment affairs committee vice-chairman MP Mohammed Janahi, the minister outlined multiple projects across Manama, Salmaniya and Hoora.
Among them are:
• Development of Road 7000 in Block 2307, which is 25pc complete and is estimated to cost BD220,000.
• Development of Road 715 in Block 1307, which is in tender stage.
• Development of Road 1805 in Block 318, Hoora for which final design is underway.
• Extensive resurfacing of roads across Hoora and Salmaniya at a cost of BD323,000
Responding to Parliament’s legislative and legal affairs committee chairman MP Mahmood Fardan, the minister said sewage coverage in the Capital Governorate Constituency Six stands at 87pc, with new connections planned in Tashan, Tubli and Al Musalla serving hundreds of properties.
Several road works have been completed since 2023, costing more than BD2.5m. A future key project will rehabilitate Avenue 14 between Budaiya Highway and Tashan Avenue to improve traffic flow, he added.
