US President Donald Trump has teased the idea of Venezuela becoming the 51st American state in a post on Truth Social.
The President shared an image showing a map of Venezuela overlaid with an American flag, accompanied by text reading "51st State". The post follows an interview with Fox News in which Trump stated he was "seriously considering" the move.
The country's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, has rejected the suggestion, stating that the nation has "no plans" to become a US state.
“We will continue to defend our integrity, our sovereignty, our independence, and our history,” said Rodríguez. She assumed the role of acting president in January 2026 after a US military operation resulted in the capture of the elected president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores. The pair were transported to New York to face trial on drug trafficking and narco-terrorism charges.
