Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani met UN secretary general António Guterres to discuss the latest regional developments and efforts to de-escalate tensions and maintain regional security and stability.
They also discussed the repercussions of Iranian attacks on Bahrain and GCC states, and Iran’s continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on energy security, international trade and the global economy.
The meeting highlighted the importance of the UN Security Council’s role in addressing issues related to global peace and security, supporting United Nations efforts to resolve conflicts through diplomatic solutions and dialogue, promoting sustainable development and strengthening humanitarian work.
They also emphasised the need to address regional challenges and advance efforts to maintain regional security and stability, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation as a priority for international peace and security.
The meeting was attended by UN Permanent Representative in New York Jamal Fares Al Ruwaie; Chief of the Co-ordination and Follow-up Sector at Foreign Ministry Saeed Abdulkhaleq Saeed; and the accompanying delegation.
Dr Al Zayani also met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on the sidelines of the UN Security Council meeting.
The two sides affirmed the deep-rooted ties between the two countries and their shared commitment to further developing bilateral co-operation in support of mutual interests, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
He also met his Pakistani counterpart Muhammad Ishaq Dar and reviewed ongoing efforts by the Pakistani government through dialogue and diplomatic solutions to reach a lasting and peaceful settlement to the US-Iran conflict.
He also met his counterparts from Cambodia, Czechia, Kyrgyzstan, Costa Rica, Argentina and Azerbaijan during his visit.
He also held a phone call with his Filipino counterpart Maria Teresa Lázaro and discussed opportunities to enhance co-operation and joint co-ordination between the GCC and Asean during Bahrain’s chairmanship of the GCC and the Philippines chairmanship of Asean. This co-operation aims to serve common interests in areas of mutual concern.
