A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Criminal Court for causing the death of an inmate in March, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) announced yesterday.
According to the SIU, the case came to light on March 27 following reports circulated on social media regarding the inmate’s death.
On the same day, the unit received a notification from the National Security Agency stating that the inmate had been assaulted by one of its personnel, resulting in multiple injuries.
The victim was transferred to hospital, where he later succumbed to those injuries.
The SIU said it launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including a review of all procedures taken from the time of the inmate’s arrest, as well as an examination of all relevant evidence and information.
The probe concluded that the defendant had committed the offence, based on sufficient evidence gathered during the inquiry.
The case was subsequently referred to the High Criminal Court, which issued the verdict yesterday.
