The cycling community turned out in force for a scenic ride at the Salman Town track to mark World Bicycle Day.
The Cyclothon was organised by the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry, in co-operation with the Bahrain Cycling Association and Youth Affairs Ministry.
Officials, cycling enthusiasts and supporters of sustainable mobility took part in the event on Wednesday.
Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to expanding cycling infrastructure across the kingdom, including the development of dedicated lanes and their integration into new urban and housing projects.
He highlighted the Salman Town cycling track, delivered efficiently within a record timeframe, as a leading example of infrastructure supporting sustainable mobility. Designed in line with international safety and sustainability standards, the track offers a safe and inclusive experience for all age groups while promoting community connectivity and healthier lifestyles in line with Bahrain’s urban development goals.
Marking World Bicycle Day, the minister said the occasion provides an opportunity to raise awareness of cycling as a practical and healthy mode of transport, and to encourage more sustainable mobility patterns in support of Bahrain’s carbon neutrality target by 2060.
The ministry’s land transport and postal affairs under-secretary, Fatima Al Dhaen, highlighted the increasing interest to integrate cycles within the kingdom’s transportation system.
The event featured a cycling tour along the dedicated tracks in Salman Town, along with awareness and interactive activities aimed at promoting bicycle use and sustainable mobility.
