Oil and Environment Minister and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs Dr Mohammed Bin Daina led Bahrain’s delegation participating in the Island States Ocean Summit, held in Tokyo, Japan.
The summit is jointly organised by The Nippon Foundation and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of Unesco (IOC-Unesco) under the theme “Sustainable Ocean Action for Resilient Islands”, in the presence of Japanese Emperor Naruhito, Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon Magnus, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and representatives of 35 countries.
Dr Bin Daina affirmed Bahrain’s commitment to strengthening its role as a leading island state in supporting science-based climate action, innovation and sustainable strategic planning, while building bridges of international co-operation to develop resilient policies that ensure the protection of oceans and coastal areas, achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 14 on Life Below Water, and support the sustainable management of seas.
The minister noted that the summit supports knowledge exchange on the protection of marine biodiversity and discussions on mechanisms for monitoring environmental risks, such as sea level rise and its impacts on islands.
He added that it also contributes to building partnerships with international networks to strengthen national capacities in scientific and environmental research.
