Combating drugs is a shared national responsibility that requires joint efforts of security, educational, health, media and religious institutions, it has been stressed.
Interior Minister and National Anti-Drug Committee chairman General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa said yesterday that this was necessary to address evolving smuggling methods and protect society.
The minister, who was attending a ceremony marking International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, emphasised Bahrain’s commitment to international partnership, regional co-ordination and collective action to combat drugs.
The day, also known as World Drug Day, is observed annually on June 26 to address the global crisis through the United Nations’ call for bold, innovative and evidence-based solutions to combat illicit trafficking and synthetic drug proliferation.
Gen Shaikh Rashid said Bahrain continues to strengthen efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking and psychotropic substances by enhancing security performance, developing work systems, strengthening co-ordination among the relevant authorities and expanding community partnership.
The ceremony included recognition of distinguished officers, non-commissioned officers and supporting entities.
The minister also toured an exhibition featuring artworks by students who won the anti-drug awareness competition.
