A security guard who amazed emergency workers by cheering them on from beneath the rubble has been successfully rescued, eight days after twin earthquakes devastated Venezuela.
Hernán Gil, who is in his 40s, was safely extricated from the ruins of a multi-storey car park in Catia La Mar following a gruelling, days-long operation. Rescue teams had finally made visual contact with him hours before pulling him to safety from beneath nine metres of debris.
His wife described his survival and rescue as nothing short of a miracle.

An international team of specialist crews from seven countries - Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal and the United States - had been working against the clock to free Mr Gil since he was first located more than 100 hours ago.
While the disaster has claimed the lives of 2,295 people across the country, Mr Gil's rescue has provided a profound moment of hope amid the tragedy.
