A British lawmaker has urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to delay the suspension of England player Jarell Quansah and allow him to play in the quarter-final clash against Norway on Saturday after the England defender received a red card against Mexico.
"Whilst I believe that it was right for Jarell Quansah to have received this red card and that refereeing rules must be applied consistently, I believe it would be right to delay his suspension until after the completion of this World Cup," Noah Law wrote in a letter to Infantino.
Law cited FIFA's controversial decision to lift the suspension of Folarin Balogun, who received a red card in the game against Bosnia-Herzegovina, triggering a one-game suspension. US President Donald Trump reportedly pressured Infantino to review the red card and allow Balogun to play against Belgium.
Asked if Britsh PM Sir Keir Starmer could make a similar intervention, education minister Olivia Bailey told Sky News: “What I’m supposed to say is politicians shouldn’t interfere in sports.
“But knowing the Prime Minister he’s probably already texting him (Infantino). Whatever we need to do, it’s coming home.”
