A Bahraini family is making an emotional appeal to the public after their 70-year-old father was left permanently paralysed following a devastating fall, with thousands of dinars still needed to continue his rehabilitation and prepare his home for his return from hospital.
Northern Municipal Council member Abdulla Al Qobaisi has taken up the family’s case, urging philanthropists, charitable organisations and members of the public to help Abdulameer Abdulla Kadhem Abbas, whose life changed dramatically after an incident at home.

The fall left Mr Abbas suffering a brain haemorrhage, a fractured spine, a severed spinal cord and multiple other injuries. After emergency treatment and spinal surgery, he is now paralysed from the waist down and requires intensive rehabilitation.
According to medical reports issued by Amana Healthcare Bahrain, he has made ‘encouraging progress’ after months of treatment. He no longer requires mechanical ventilation, is participating in daily physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions and is responding well to treatment. However, doctors have recommended that rehabilitation continues to maximise his independence and prevent further complications.
Mr Al Qobaisi said the family now faces a race against time as the patient is expected to leave hospital within days.
“This is one of those humanitarian cases that deserves the support of everyone who is able to help,” he told his colleagues during the Northern Municipal Council general-secretariat meeting yesterday. “Some generous donors have already stepped forward and financed the construction of a bedroom and accessible bathroom that suit his condition, for which the family is deeply grateful. The Hamad Town Social Charity Society has also provided assistance. However, much more remains to be done.
“The family still needs support to continue his rehabilitation programme and obtain essential medical equipment and home facilities that will allow him to live with dignity.”
Mr Al Qobaisi explained that approximately BD3,000 will help complete six months of intensive physiotherapy, while additional funds could cover the cost of a medical bed, wheelchair, patient hoist, mobility aids and specialised bathroom equipment.
“He is a retired citizen whose pension barely covers daily living expenses and existing financial commitments,” Mr Al Qobaisi added. “Our role, as municipal representatives, is not limited to services and infrastructure. We also carry the concerns of our residents and hope this appeal reaches compassionate people willing and able to make a real difference in someone’s life.”

Mr Abbas, born in 1956, is the father of one son and three daughters. He currently lives with his son and two daughters in his government home in Hamad Town, while his eldest daughter, Hawraa, who is married with children, has become the driving force behind efforts to secure support for her father.
“My father was the pillar of our family,” Ms Hawraa Abbas said. “Before the accident he was independent and always cared for us. Today he depends completely on others for every movement, every meal and every daily need.”
He was earlier treated for a brain tumour and was making a good recovery when he had an accident attempting to climb upstairs from the first storey of his home to the upper floor.
She described the emotional struggle facing the family as preparations begin for his discharge from hospital.

“We are thankful that he survived and has shown remarkable improvement, but bringing him home safely requires equipment and specialised care that we simply cannot afford,” she said.
“We’re only asking for the opportunity to continue his treatment and give him the best possible quality of life. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to helping my father regain some independence.”
