Nearly 900 film submissions from 55 countries have been received for the sixth edition of the Bahrain International Film festival (BIFF), marking a major milestone as the festival opens its official competition to international entries for the first time.
While previous editions primarily showcased Bahraini and regional productions, this year’s competition has attracted filmmakers from around the world, reflecting the event’s growing reach.
Festival artistic and technical director Ammar Zainal said preparations for this year’s event are at an advanced stage.
“A total of 894 submissions from 55 countries have been received, representing a significant shift that strengthens the festival’s growing international profile,” he said.
“Opening the competition to entries from around the world reflects the festival’s long-term vision of elevating Bahrain’s film industry and introducing the country’s cinema to global audiences.
“BIFF continues to build regional and international partnerships that support its strategic objectives, expand its reach and create opportunities for Bahraini filmmakers to develop their craft and gain international exposure,” he said.
Mr Zainal added that the kingdom has consistently promoted messages of peace, openness and cultural dialogue, with the festival forming part of the Bahrain’s broader cultural landscape by showcasing creativity, artistic expression and cultural diversity.
Alongside the film screenings, this year’s programme will feature workshops, panel discussions and accompanying events aimed primarily at supporting and developing Bahraini filmmakers. Full programme details will be announced in the coming weeks.
The festival is also expected to welcome a distinguished line-up of actors, directors, producers and cinema professionals from Bahrain and abroad, further reinforcing its role as a regional and international platform for the exchange of ideas and industry expertise.
The sixth edition of the BIFF will take place from November 5 to 10.
The competition is open to both amateur and professional filmmakers. Eligible films must have been produced after January 1, 2024, and must not have been previously screened theatrically, broadcast on television or released on streaming platforms.
Multiple submissions are permitted, provided each film has a maximum running time of 30 minutes.
Awards will be presented across five categories: Bahraini Films, Short Narrative Films, Documentary Films, Animation Films and Student Films.
