A Bahraini woman in her twenties was killed and several members of her family were injured after the bus carrying them overturned in Saudi Arabia while they were travelling from Mecca to Medina following the performance of Umrah.
According to a relative and the cousin of the deceased, Hassan Al Daqqaq, the bus was carrying 18 members of the same Bahraini family when the accident occurred.
He told the GDN from Medina that the crash claimed the life of Zahraa Abdulkarim Hassan, while a number of passengers suffered injuries of varying severity and were transferred to King Fahad Hospital in Medina for treatment.
Mr Al Daqqaq said medical teams were closely monitoring the injured, adding that two family members remained in critical condition.
He said many suffered fractures, bruises and other injuries, while one patient was due to undergo surgery.
He also confirmed that Bahrain’s Consulate in Saudi Arabia had dispatched officials to the hospital to follow up on the condition of the injured, provide support to the family and co-ordinate with the Saudi authorities.
Saudi emergency services rushed to the scene and launched necessary procedures, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are continuing.
The tragedy comes as many Bahraini pilgrims continue to travel to the holy cities during the summer season to perform Umrah.
“Two female relatives with severe injuries have had operations and another female relative will enter the operations theatre shortly,” Mr Al said from hospital.
“Others suffered varying injuries and have been treated.”
