More than 500 new parking spaces, the expansion of a major shopping destination, upgraded electrical infrastructure, enhanced safety measures and a sustainable landscaping programme are set to reshape Isa Town, Bahrain’s oldest housing town.
Established in 1968, the landmark community is undergoing a major transformation following a high-level meeting between Strategic Thinking Bloc member MP Dr Mariam Al Dhaen and Southern Municipality director-general Isa Al Buainain at the municipality’s headquarters in Riffa.
The meeting yesterday reviewed a series of ongoing and planned development projects across the Southern Governorate’s constituency two, which the MP represents, aimed at strengthening the local economy, modernising infrastructure, improving public services and enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors.
Dr Al Dhaen said the package of projects reflected a comprehensive development vision that would preserve Isa Town’s status as one of Bahrain’s most important commercial centres, while preparing it for future growth.
“These projects are not isolated initiatives; they form part of an integrated development strategy that supports economic growth, improves public services and delivers a better quality of life for residents,” she said.
“I appreciate the efforts of Mr Al Buainain and the Southern Municipality team in implementing projects based on effective planning, public-private partnerships and the optimum use of municipal facilities to achieve sustainable development.”
Among the flagship schemes discussed was the joint investment project between the Southern Municipality and Ramez Group to expand the Ramez shopping centre in Isa Town.
Dr Al Dhaen described the development as a successful model of public-private partnership that would strengthen Bahrain’s investment environment while attracting more shoppers and supporting local businesses.
“It reflects growing confidence in Bahrain’s business climate and will provide more advanced retail services, stimulate commercial activity and reinforce Isa Town’s position as a leading shopping destination,” she said.
She also highlighted the construction of more than 500 new parking spaces in the popular Isa Town Traditional Market Complex, describing it as one of the most significant projects for traders and visitors.

“Parking has long been one of the biggest challenges facing shoppers and business owners,” she said.
“This project will improve traffic flow, provide easier access to commercial outlets and increase the attractiveness of the market for customers.”
Dr Al Dhaen welcomed ongoing works to upgrade the market’s internal lighting network and replace ageing electrical cables, saying they would improve infrastructure efficiency while creating a safer and more comfortable environment for traders and customers.
She also praised the municipality’s regular inspection campaigns, which include educating shop owners, checking electrical installations and ensuring compliance with Civil Defence safety requirements.
“These proactive initiatives strengthen public safety, protect lives and property, and help ensure the sustainability of commercial activity,” she said.
Looking ahead, she welcomed plans to offer prime locations within the market for investment, saying the initiative would diversify commercial activities, attract quality projects and maximise the value of municipal assets.
She also highlighted the proposed connection of the market to Bahrain’s treated water network, describing it as an important environmental sustainability project that would support landscaping, expand green spaces and enhance the area’s urban appearance.
Established 58 years old ago as Bahrain’s first planned housing town, Isa Town has evolved into one of the kingdom’s busiest residential, commercial and educational centres.
Dr Al Dhaen said the latest projects would ensure it continued to meet the needs of a growing population while strengthening its role as a key economic hub.
“When infrastructure, investment, sustainability and public services advance together, the entire community benefits,” she added. “This integrated vision will support economic growth, attract investment and meet the aspirations of residents while reinforcing Isa Town’s role as a vibrant commercial destination.”
