Burnham, nicknamed the “King of the North”, was elected leader of Britain’s governing Labour Party on Friday, clearing the way for him to become the country’s seventh prime minister in a decade after an unprecedented period of political upheaval.
Burnham won the leadership on a pledge to halt the rise of the populist Reform UK party.
He will formally take office today. Outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to submit his resignation to King Charles III before Burnham travels to Buckingham Palace, where the monarch will invite him to form a government.
Burnham will then officially become prime minister.
