CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious star Lenny Martinez climbed one position to seventh on the general classification yesterday after the 16th stage of the 113th Tour de France – the world’s most popular international cycling race.
Martinez was the squad’s top finisher in yesterday’s leg, which was an individual time trial (ITT) over a course of 26.1 kilometres. He finished with a time that was two minutes 49.97 seconds behind winner Remco Evenepoel of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.
Martinez thus enjoyed his improvement in the top 10 of the overall rankings, where he is 12 minutes 50 seconds behind race leader Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
Martinez also remained seventh on the King of the Mountains rankings and fourth in the best young rider standings, where teammate Antonio Tiberi was 10th.
Amongst Bahrain Victorious’ other riders in yesterday’s ITT, Damiano Caruso finished 43rd, Tiberi was 62nd, Robert Stannard came 109th, Vlad Van Mechelen was 123rd, Phil Bauhaus finished 137th, Kamil Gradek came 142nd, and Matej Mohoric finished 146th.
This year’s Tour de France covers a total of 3,319km and 54,303m of elevation. It is the second Grand Tour of this international cycling season – the first was the Giro d’Italia held in May, while the last will be the Vuelta a Espana, which is scheduled for August and September.
