The Public Prosecution has filed an appeal before the Cassation Court, challenging the acquittal of a terrorist suspect accused of financing and supporting operatives in Iran. The defendant had faced charges of engaging in intelligence activities with the aim of carrying out hostile acts against Bahrain.
In a statement, the Public Prosecution yesterday said the ruling was ‘inconsistent with the prosecution’s position’ and has therefore been challenged before the kingdom’s highest court.
“The court’s written verdict suggests that the defendant committed illegal acts related to the charges against him, even though judges ultimately acquitted him,” the statement said.
“This is why the acquittal should be overturned on appeal.
“The defendant played an active role in terrorist activities by raising and providing financial support and was charged with joining a terrorist group, co-operating with a foreign state in activities intended to harm the country’s interests, and financing terrorist operations by providing money to those responsible.
“We believe that the evidence was strong enough to prove these charges, but the court acquitted the defendant and the prosecution is now appealing that decision.”
In the statement, the prosecution explained that several investigations were launched into the defendant’s alleged involvement in laundering funds obtained through the illegal collection of money and in financing terrorism. The investigations established that he was involved in collecting funds for that purpose and using them to support terrorist operatives and the entities to which they belong.
The probe further found that, over the past five years alone, he allegedly collected more than BD21 million, which was transferred to fugitive operatives in Iran.
According to the Public Prosecution, this was intended to support agencies with which they were engaged in intelligence collaboration and to finance terrorist plots against Bahrain. The Public Prosecution is in the process of referring the case to the court.
It also reaffirmed that it remains fully committed to taking all necessary legal measures and procedures, within the scope of its terrorism-related investigations, to identify and disrupt sources of support, thereby undermining terrorist plots targeting the country. The prosecution will do so by exercising all powers conferred upon it by law to combat terrorism in both its personal and financial dimensions.
