Heavy rain-induced floods and landslides in Kerala over the weekend have left eight people dead, 13 injured and eight others missing, authorities in the Indian state announced on Sunday.
Officials signalled relief as rainfall intensity eased following Saturday's downpour, which triggered landslides, mudslides, and widespread waterlogging, causing deaths, injuries, and extensive damage to property and livelihoods.
According to official figures, 5,792 people have been shifted to 209 relief camps across the state. The rains have caused severe structural damage, completely destroying 27 homes and leaving 196 partially damaged.
The state government has assured financial and material assistance to the families of the deceased, as well as to those who lost their homes and livelihoods in rain-related incidents.
Clean-up operations have begun in flood-affected areas as weather conditions improve, though authorities continue to urge residents in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant.
With further rain forecast through August 5, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for 12 districts in the state.
