APM Terminals Bahrain, operator of Khalifa Bin Salman Port, has celebrated a national milestone after the port won the regional ‘Sustainable Institution’ award at the Gulf Green Mobility Forum 2026 in Salalah, Oman, one of two prominent accolades secured by Bahrain at the event.
The company has expressed its immense satisfaction with this achievement, which crowns the journey of sustainable development in the port sector.
The company commended the supportive legislative and regulatory environment provided by the Bahrain for the transport and logistics sector, praising the pivotal role of the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry in steering the kingdom's drive towards developing an advanced, sustainable transport sector, fostering regional co-operation, and sharing best practices in green mobility.
The company explained that Khalifa bin Salman Port receiving this award embodies the success of the strategic partnership between the public and private sectors in translating national policies into tangible operational projects on the ground, noting that the solar energy project is the primary pillar behind this recognition.
The project cost approximately BD3.8 million, involving the installation of approximately 26,960 solar panels across an area of nearly 71,000sqm on warehouse rooftops. With a production capacity of up to 11.4 megawatts, the project generates around 18 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually, enough to fully cover the port's electricity needs. This qualitative transition contributed to reducing the terminal's carbon footprint by 71 per cent during 2025.

The company concluded by emphasising that the solar energy project is part of a broader strategic vision to completely decarbonise port operations, which includes expanding the electrification of operational equipment and vehicles. This aligns with APM Terminals' global commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 and supporting the kingdom's drive towards carbon neutrality.
