The coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally-recognised government intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by Houthi forces towards Riyadh, its spokesperson Major-General Turki Al Maliki said yesterday.
Maj-Gen Al Maliki said the interception was carried out in accordance with the rules of engagement, and the missile was destroyed in the air without causing damage.
He added that coalition forces were monitoring developments and taking the necessary measures to protect civilians and vital facilities, and to counter threats to the kingdom’s security.
He said the Houthis’ continued attempts to target civilians and civilian infrastructure in Riyadh reflected the militia’s intransigence and deliberate targeting of civilian areas.
He added that air defences had thwarted Houthi attempts to target civilians and civilian infrastructure in Bish, Taif, Farasan and Yanbu.
Maj-Gen Al Maliki said the coalition leadership had the right to take any measures it deemed appropriate, in accordance with international humanitarian law and customary rules, to deter further Houthi attacks.
Bahrain strongly condemned the escalating terrorist attacks carried out by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia against Saudi Arabia, and its continued repeated and deliberate attempts to target civilians and civilian objects in the capital Riyadh, and the cities of Bish, Taif, Farasan and Yanbu.
The Foreign Ministry in a statement said Bahrain considers it a flagrant violation of the rules of international law, international humanitarian law, the Charter of the United Nations and the relevant Security Council resolutions.
The ministry affirmed Bahrain’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, and its complete support for all measures taken by it to preserve its sovereignty, security and stability.
