A COURT has reduced the jail sentence of an inmate who insulted a prison guard in English before hurling a shoe that struck him in the face during a medication round.
The High Criminal Court had last month sentenced the 29-year-old Bahraini to five years in prison in absentia.
He later appeared in court to contest the verdict, and judges reduced the sentence to three years.
The court heard that the police officer was distributing medication to inmates and asked the defendant for his name and CPR number when the incident occurred.
“I was doing my job in prison, handing prescriptions to inmates in Building 3,” the policeman testified.
“I asked the defendant for his information so he could receive his medications, but he refused.
“I then told him I would not give him the medication and he insulted me and threw his shoe at me.”
According to court documents, the officer initially suspected that his nose had been broken, but no lasting injury was reported. The defendant was charged and, in August, convicted of assaulting an on-duty member of the public security forces without causing permanent injury.
He was also convicted of insulting the officer, showing disrespect towards him and damaging his reputation by making a claim that the court found had ‘no basis in reality’.
The Bahraini reportedly admitted to the charges and the incident was captured on CCTV.
