BAHRAIN will further increase its import of Taiwanese fruit this year, according to a top diplomat.
Taiwan Trade Mission deputy counsellor Albert Yeh said fruit and orchids imports will increase this year due to public demand.
A fruit sample tasting event was held yesterday at Al Jazira Supermarket in Mahooz where guavas, dragon fruits and golden diamond pineapples were displayed.
Lemons and high-quality orchids were also showcased for the public.
“Bahrain’s imports of Taiwanese fruit are on the increase,” Mr Yeh told the GDN.
“Taiwanese fruit is very sweet and meets aesthetic standards which is why people in Bahrain are liking it.
“Pineapples, in specific, are very tasty and grown by farmers with high technical skills.
“Orchids too have been among important exports of Taiwan. They are exported to Bahrain, Japan and China.
“Taiwanese experts were also brought to Bahrain several years ago to teach Bahraini farmers to grow orchids.”
Products displayed yesterday were from Pingtung county, which is regarded as a production base for agriculture, forestry, fishery and husbandry in Taiwan.
County magistrate Pan Men-an as well as representatives from the Trade Mission of Taiwan in Bahrain were present at the event.
Taiwanese fruits were first imported into Bahrain in March 2015.
