Bahrain Journalists’ Association (BJA) said that Ms Al Shaer will appear at the Public Prosecution tomorrow following a complaint lodged by lawyer Fatima Al Hawaj and Bahrain University professor Dr Shaikha Lulwa bint Khalifa Al Khalifa.
The GDN earlier reported that the complaints were filed after Ms Al Shaer described Bahraini citizens as lacking in moral values during her weekly programme On My Responsibility.
She also compared “bad-mannered” Bahrainis to Mowgli, a fictional character from the Jungle Book, because she claimed that they acted like they lived in a forest and lacked moral values.
Freedom
“BJA rejects attempts to silence journalists and media personnel and suppressing their freedom in connection to filing complaints against them,” it said in a statement.
“The BJA saw the latest episode of the programme (by Ms Al Shaer) and she spoke about how Bahrainis were in the past compared with how they are in the present. She was performing her right to constructive criticism for the changes in society. BJA supports Ms Al Shaer against the three complaints filed against her.”
Ms Al Shaer’s comments sparked an uproar on social media, resulting in an Arabic hashtag that translated to Mowgli trending on Twitter for several days.
