Manama: A Bahraini engineering student has bagged BD2,000 after claiming second place in an international technology showcase.
Tasneem Yousif worked alongside fellow aspiring engineers Zainab Fardan Ahmed, Aysha Al Haram and Abeer Al Khalaf to create the ‘Robodem’ device that can detect flammable gases.
Judges at the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) Invention Projects Students Showcase were so enamoured with the invention that the students “nearly clinched the top spot”, Ms Yousif told the GDN.
“I was team leader, so I went for the competition and represented the team and the project,”
she said.
“We are going to spend the money we won on the project, to improve it and update it in order to make our own company.
“We want to be able to sell it, but we need further support as the award isn’t enough.
“We need investors in the project and company.”
Ms Yousif said that GITEX had been a learning experience for her, as she met companies interested in her project.
“GITEX was great, I met a lot of companies, especially Korean and Chinese ones,” she said.
“There were a lot of robotics products and all the latest technologies, so I learnt many things.”
The ‘Robodem’ device alerts users to potentially lethal gases such as liquid biogas, propane gas, butane gas and natural gas.
It was designed using Lego Mindstorms NXT products and features a smart sensor that measures air pressure, temperature
and humidity.
A live streaming video camera is also integrated into the robot, as well as a GPS tracker that can be accessed via an Android mobile application, through a website or even by Bluetooth.
GITEX is an annual consumer computer and electronics trade show, exhibition and conference which takes place in Dubai, with over 3,600 brands taking part from all over the world in this year’s show.
