MANAMA: Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) has achieved a 29 per cent increase in recycling during 2017, while also reducing paper consumption by 34pc.
The company has recycled 15,081kg worth of waste in 2017, compared with 13,588kg in 2016. This includes paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminium cans.
The total amount of recycled waste over the past four years comes to 59,385kg.
Details were included in the company’s sustainability report, which also said it reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 25,224kg in 2017 and 24,165kg in 2016.
Other environmental achievements included the installation of 1,731 LEDs since 2013, resulting in 746 MWh per year of energy savings. This initiative has also led to a carbon dioxide emission reduction of around 371 tonnes.
Other environmental benchmarks include the conversion of 33.3pc of the company’s land into green areas.
Meanwhile, the company saw its net profit rise from $1.08m in 2016 to around $32m in 2017.
The company made $299m worth of sales in 2017, compared with $235m in 2016.
It also achieved its highest annual combined production in 2016, reaching 1,617,422 tonnes.
The biennial report was presented to the company’s board by president Dr Abdulrahman Jawahery.
