(His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa started the print run of the first Gulf Daily News edition on March 21, 1978.)
A highly anticipated publication documenting the past 40 years in Bahrain gets released today (June 7).
The 208-page hardback provides a comprehensive overview of four decades of landmark moments, as portrayed through the pages of the GDN.
It is a souvenir edition that commemorates the 40th anniversary of the newspaper, drawing on the GDN’s extensive news archive to catalogue key events - making it a unique resource.
However, it also features input from more than 70 companies who also share their stories in the historic publication, called 40 Years of Progress.
“I am absolutely delighted with the response from the business community,” said Al Hilal Group managing director Ronnie Middleton.
“It is much appreciated by the directors, management and staff of the GDN.
“It is a clear and unequivocal message that the GDN has always been and continues to be the undisputed leading English media platform.”
In addition to a chronological history beginning when the GDN was launched on March 21, 1978, the publication also contains a number of old pre-1970 photographs illustrating the country’s rich heritage.
“This is the best publication we have ever produced,” said GDN editor-in-chief George Williams.
“It without a doubt confirms our supreme position in Bahrain’s publishing market.
“The publication is a unique record of Bahrain’s rich history, which will become a valuable source of reference for years to come.”
Copies of the book are being given out to all GDN subscribers today (June 7).
In the next couple of slides we bring to you some of the wonderful archival images of Bahrain as seen from the pages of the GDN.
