MANAMA: Bahrain Association of Banks (BAB) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bahrain Deaf Society to launch a unified dictionary for banking terminologies in sign language, to enable deaf and dumb to deal with banks and make transactions easily.
The agreement was signed by BAB chief executive Dr Waheed Al Qassim and president of Bahrain Deaf Society Salma Al Asfoor. Present were head of translators’ committee Mahdi Alnaimi and Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) director of retail banking supervision Yusuf Hasan.
Dr Al Qassim stressed that this initiative comes under the directions of the CBB, in the framework of ensuring that customers with disabilities, including deaf, have access to all banking services.
Dr Al Qassim said BAB will support the society to launch the dictionary to help all deaf persons to open a bank account, deposits, withdrawals and transfers. He praised CBB efforts to train banking and financial employees to serve disabled and elderly.
“This comes in the framework of BAB’s social responsibilities towards Bahraini society to support special needs people and to integrate them in the community. Banks and financial institutions in Bahrain are the foremost supporters of Bahraini society through donations and adopting social and humanitarian initiatives,” Dr Al Qassim added.
Ms Al Asfoor thanked BAB for supporting the launch of this dictionary which will ensure that deaf people have the right to access banking services equally.
Mr Hasan said that CBB is keen to promote the financial inclusion concept which enables all society segments to access banking services including special needs people, maintaining their legal rights and ensuring the confidentiality of their information.
