A WOMAN jailed for three years for embezzling more than BD100,000 from a government hospital had her sentence slashed following a retrial.
The 40-year-old Bahraini medical records supervisor was found guilty of embezzlement by the High Criminal Court in May 2019.
An appeal at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court was rejected in December 2019.
A final appeal was filed at the Cassation Court which in November last year returned the case to the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court for a retrial following a technicality.
She was then handed a year in jail.
“The defendant was handed 12 months behind bars in connection with the crime,” read the court ruling.
The woman embezzled BD111,708 from Jidhafs Maternity Hospital from December 2011 until June 2014.
The crime came to light when Health Ministry officials noticed a difference between the money recorded as received by the hospital and the money officially submitted to the ministry, according to court documents.
It was also found that the shortfall occurred only when the defendant was on duty.
A ministry official previously described how he discovered the alleged embezzlement.
One of the defendant’s colleagues described how she suspected the former of committing foul play when she found BD900 missing.
Prosecutors quoted an expert as saying that the forged documents contained the defendant’s signature and handwriting.
