The number of people who had their vehicles inspected in private technical centres has increased by 300 per cent in the first 10 months of the year, General Traffic Department director of licensing affairs Colonel Mohammed Mahmoud said.
The percentage of vehicles that passed the technical inspection reached 98pc compared with the same period last year, he said.
The General Traffic Department is looking into new requests to open more centres for light and heavy vehicles in the various governorates of the kingdom, he added.
He said that a ministerial resolution regulated the assignment of the vehicle technical inspection services to the private sector.
The decision aims to involve the private sector in providing a technical inspection service to reduce pressure on vehicle owners and enable them to use a technical inspection centre in addition to the General Traffic Department.
The private inspection centres are supervised by the General Directorate of Traffic to ensure that they meet the technical requirements, he added.
The aim is to ensure similar services and standards in all centres following the qualification of technical examiners in the private centres.
