IRAQ is aiming to sign new agreements with Bahrain across numerous fields to boost trade and travel with more scheduled flights between the two countries proposed.
Foreign Minister Dr Fuad Hussein, who is also the country’s Deputy Prime Minister, said that he had extended a personal invitation to Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani to visit Baghdad.
“Our relationship with Bahrain is good and I have invited Dr Al Zayani to come to Baghdad, which we will hopefully arrange soon,” said Dr Hussein who attended the 17th Manama Dialogue.
“I have been here twice, within a year, and we are going to strengthen ties with Bahrain in all possible avenues.
“We’re talking about signing memorandums of understanding and we are going to give instructions to our teams to prepare them.
“The most important thing is to organise more flights between Bahrain and Iraq, which can help the relationship and enhance trade links.
“Our diplomatic ties are excellent, so we can definitely co-operate – in investments, electricity, tourism, religious tourism – these are all elements that we can co-operate.”
Thousands of Bahrainis often travel to Najaf and Karbala to mark the Ashoora festivities. However, Bahraini tour operators have had to cancel scheduled trips in recent years because of violent unrest.
